What is an NVQ?
An NVQ is a quality symbol describing a national standard of competence across all levels of the workforce within British industry and commerce. Awarding bodies (such as Edexcel, OCR, etc.) seek approval from The Qualifications and Curriculum Agency (QCA) to award qualifications based on these national standards.
What is involved in gaining an NVQ?
Each NVQ is composed of a number of units of competence. Each unit comprises of a series of performance indicators against which candidates are assessed to show they can perform the activity specified. Candidates will be required to build up a portfolio of evidence to cover all of the performance indicators in their chosen units.
Is past experience taken into account?
Candidates can prove themselves in areas in which they are already competent by having past achievements recognised through Accreditation of Prior Learning / Experience (APL / APE). APE benefits adult learners and those without formal training or qualifications.
